Domaine de la Charbonnière has been run by the somewhat diffident Maret family since 1912. What many consider reticence on the part of the Marets, we're beginning to think might just be a quiet confidence in their exceptional terroir, because most critics agree with Jeff Leve at The Wine Cellar Insider that this is “a contender for the best value wine in Chateauneuf-du-Pape.” Anyone who has tasted it is sure to agree.
Cuvée Domaine is 70% Grenache with the balance a mix of Mourvèdre and Syrah. Like slipping on a silk-lined coat; it’s at once slinky and warming. Concentrated cherries, blackberries, plums, orange zest, subtle spices and black tea; it has Sunday roast and comfort food like stews written all over it.
